The International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF): Developing a tuna conservation initiative

30/09/2013
José Antonio Boccherini Bogert
Worlwide tuna consumption growth has generated sustainability concerns. Some environmental NGOs have launched campaigns to press retailers and tuna canning companies. In April 2013, Susan Jackson, President of ISSF (a Foundation created by the industry in 2009 to achieve tuna fishing sustainability) had to present the ideas y actions for the Strategic Plan debate in the upcoming Board Meeting. Achieving tuna sustainability was a complex undertaking, as most tuna fishing occurred in international waters, which could not easily be managed. How to drive worldwide adoption of sustainability practices? Which measures had to be adopted? How to enforce them? How to reconcile the multiple diverging interests in the global tuna value chain?
