Shifts to the food business horizon: certain difficulties, new opportunities

Sevilla 14 of February of 2019 Hour: 09:30h

This Seminar is a forum for debate, to reflect and draw practical conclusions on key aspects of the business of food companies. In addition, the Seminar allows attendees to exchange experiences, detect business opportunities in the Food Chain and relate to a group of people with common interests. To address these aims, genuine business cases will be analyzed, and two Conferences-Symposiums will be held in which reflections and ideas will be provided to address the current strategic challenges in the Food Chain.

1. The rise of protectionism

Agro Sevilla Group Case Study: facing the challenge of the North American market

Agro Sevilla was established in Andalusia in 1977 as a second-level cooperative and in 2017 was one of the largest producers, packers and exporters of olives in the world. Since 1994, it became the first Spanish exporter in the sector. On June 22, 2017, the two main American companies dedicated to the production of black olives, Musco Family Olive and Bell-Carter Foods, filed a complaint with the US Department of Commerce. Their allegations were based on supposed dumping practices and the existence of subsidies, which, they argued, made their products less competitive. The case raises the need to have an alternative plan for contingency of the environment (in this case import protectionism), especially when there is a large concentration of sales in a country (USA), in a channel (Food Service) and in a product like rusty black olives

2. Conference-Symposium: Anticipating the change in the economic and financial cycle

The economy is slowing down, central banks have initiated the withdrawal of monetary stimuli and raised rates. The financial cycle is changing, and the economy is showing signs of exhaustion. The government aims to allow the current legislature to run its course, with increasing weakness while structural reforms have been abandoned and banks and companies are concerned about the rise in taxes and the foreseen increase in public spending. Despite the deleveraging of the private sector, public debt determines that we continue to have a high external debt. This is the greatest vulnerability, along with low productivity and high unemployment. Some external risks are moderated: Italy, Brexit; others remain: USA-China tariff war, crisis of emerging currencies, populisms, etc. Is the deceleration worrisome? Are we on the verge of a new financial crisis? Are the government's policies suitable? What margin of maneuver do central banks and governments have? How can the crisis affect companies? Are banks and companies ready for a change in cycle?

3. First steps to develop a digital strategy

DIA Group Case study: How to develop a digital presence from scratch?

In May 2012, the team responsible for the development of the digital environment in DIA (Digital Team) reflected on how to carry out the three objectives they had determined would be key to the presence of the distribution chain in the digital environment: a) To obtain a greater understanding of customers (current and potential) b) To attract customers to stores c) To start selling online to test in this medium, without affecting the traditional business, without cannibalizing in-store sales and without adversely affecting DIA's brand image.

4. Conference-Symposium: Amazon + Whole Foods: a new player in the sector

In June 2017 Amazon, and after several attempts to include food products in its sales offer, shook the American and global food retail market by announcing the acquisition of Whole Foods for $13.7 billion. This acquisition catapulted the giant of electronic commerce in the world of physical food stores, and casts a shadow on everything that is predicted by gurus related to the business strategies of the companies involved in the food chain. How would you react if you were the CEO of one of the competing companies in the retail of the big food consumption? What levers can I manage to face this threat? Is this corporate operation really going to change the way we buy food?
